The Seaweed Company

Description from food designer

SeaMeat represents more than just a seaweed food product; it is a distinctive design proposition aimed at fostering sustainability and health within the meat value chain, at similar or lower cost.

Our seaweed food ingredient blend seamlessly integrates into beef products, elevating the taste while preserving the familiar meaty texture and mouthfeel. This can be burgers, meatballs, or any meal with minced meat. The specific seaweed blend in our recipe harmonizes perfectly with a 25% inclusion in a unit of meat. By replacing 25% of meat in one kg of beef with seaweed, our research suggests we can offset 8 kgs of CO₂e and conserve 1800L of water. The SeaMeat proposition addresses the need for retailers and food service to reduce scope 3 emissions, by introducing a more sustainable meat-product without adopting a 100% plant-based approach. Our focus is on enhancing the sustainability of the meat value chain by incorporating a nutritious and sustainable ingredient—seaweed—into widely consumed meat products.

Additional information from food designer

The Seaweed Company is a vertically integrated company that currently produces its own seaweed in Ireland. It has the capacity to cultivate seaweed at scale in a reliable, traceable, and cost-competitive manner. Utilizing a B2B food ingredient strategy with retailers and their meat suppliers, our team collaborates closely to create customized hybrid meat products such as burgers, meatballs, or ready-made meals. In a commercial collaboration with a retailer, we improved the Nutriscore of a beef burger from D to B. Furthermore, seaweed farming creates jobs, promotes ocean regeneration, by addressing marine biodiversity and coastal eutrophication. Hence, SeaMeat represents a future-proof and sustainable solution for our food systems.
