Description from food designer

Imagine at breakfast on a shaded terrace in Crete with a view of the Mediterranean sea. Your choice is locally sourced artisanal spead, Charoupomerenta, that uses just three ingredients, and is a simple alternative to the ubiquitous globally sourced sugar and palm oil-rich chocolate spread.

The main ingredient is carob syrup derived from an ancient cultivar of the carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua, known for its low impact and overall resilience. To create our unique spread, we source carob syrup from the estate of Arodamos, an organically certified farm. The other two organic ingredients, sesame butter and hazelnut paste, are sourced locally or from within Greece, creating a low embodied energy product. Localizing food through decentralised small-hold farm network can regenerate Earth while meeting consumer needs. Celebrating Cretan heritage, our product caters to the hospitality industry in Crete and will also be available across Greece and the EU as a premium artisanal condiment.

Designing with circularity in mind is critical for driving Climate Action. By participating locally, everyone can feel a personal sense of contribution, which helps alleviate collective Climate Anxiety. By restructuring food systems to decentralize production and promote the consumption of local produce, we can inspire innovation that advocates for low-impact, nature-first ingredients. Carob, a low-impact crop, can indirectly help curb the expansion of cocoa/ palm oil farming, which contributes to deforestation. By promoting Carob, which thrives in arid climates, we can preserve the agricultural traditions of Minoan and Cretan cultures. Our product design is simple, using a few ingredients to achieve a distinctive taste. Our labels list traceable ingredients sourced from farms practicing regenerative agriculture, which enriches the soil and enhances its microbiome. By boosting demand for regenerative farming, we can strengthen sustainability within a circular economy across Crete and EU.
