Description from food designer

Inspired by the upcycled carob flour, a by-product of making carob syrup for our product, Charoupomerenta, we have created an artisanal granola called Charoupomuseli.

This granola has a unique nutty and chocolatey flavor, specifically designed for the hospitality industry in Crete, and can be exported to Northern Europe in eco-friendly packaging. Charoupomuseli is part of a collaborative initiative with the Arodamos estate, a carob producer, and other small farms in Crete and Greece. The product creates business opportunities for these farms while promoting regenerative agriculture, especially for the Arodamos estate, which already practices intercropping with olives, herbs, legumes, and tomatoes. Our project is has low embodied energy, follows circular food design principles using low-impact, diverse ingredients. These organic ingredients include crops suitable for Greece's dry summer climate, such as millet, sorghum, fava beans, sesame, and hazelnuts.

Additional information from food designer

Organically farmed in Crete and Greece, these crops have minimal negative impacts on the ecosystem. A passionate community in Crete and across Greece actively promotes regenerative farming, focused on their unique soil and climate. We support this effort by sourcing and collaborating on our granola ingredients from Greek organic-certified farmers. Our goal is to raise awareness and understanding of regenerative farming in Crete and Greece leveraging knowledge as a catalyst for transformation. The main ingredient, at 30%, is carob flour, upcycled from carob syrup residue used to make our other product, Charoupomerenta. The Carob trees develop deep roots and are intercropped with wild or cultivated olive trees and variety of herbs providing them much needed share in arid Crete. These sustainable practices are based on centuries of accumulated knowledge, techniques, and ancient wisdom, a continuation and adaptation of Minoan and Cretan agricultural heritage.
